The Bizz Johnson 50k was a happy finale to my race year! I managed very even splits and came in under 5 hours. Cool temps and the partly overcast sky made for perfect running weather.

A note about race reports
Writing interesting race reports that also record the events of the day can be challenging – in a fun way! Earlier this year it took several posts to capture my ideas and feelings around pacing and crewing at the Hardrock 100.
I always appreciate a report that departs from the “this is what I did and who I saw” format. Krissy Moehl wrote a fun short report about her GoldLeaf Half marathon. I also liked this report from trail runner Dana writing about her Boston-Qualifying road marathon. I get that not every runner likes to write, but I do enjoy writing and I also enjoy a good read. So, thanks to all who take the time to share and inspire!

Do you actually run in the down jacket? I’d be soaked, but then again I’m a “clydesdale” runner – do you have any tips for laundering it?

Not even close… I like to run Bizz in shorts and a tank. Cold at the start, but sure feels good as you warm up with the elevation drop. Funny thing, I actually tried running in this coat while pacing a The Bear (http://www.tahoerunco.com/2013/10/race-report-the-bear-100-crew-pacer/) but was very quickly overheated and the coat was drenched with condensation inside my famous “berry colored rain coat” (http://www.tahoerunco.com/2013/09/hardrock-experience-chapter-3/)
Laundering down is a snap… I have experience from washing the kids’ bedding:
1.) Use warm water for BOTH wash and rinse (usually cold water is the rinse default)
2.) Add 2 balls to the washer (like these dryer balls – http://www.amazon.com/Ontel-Dryer-Balls/dp/B004W7GNB2) or use clean tennis balls
3.) Hang to dry. Patagonia says you can use the drying, but I get better results by hang drying. We have a wood stove, so that works well.
I have used this method for all sorts of down products, including coats, comforters, and very high-end sleeping bags.

That’s a familiar finish line, btw. I did the 50K there is 2012, I think. Nice course. I trained for the 50K in 2013 but switched to the 26.2 at the packet pick-up and ended up having a bad day regardless. I have a ton of Bizz J photos – my flickr set is linked from the photo section of the Bizz J website.
